As Samoa prepares for the arrival of Commonwealth leaders in two weeks for the CHOGM summit, concerns have emerged over the timing of a trip involving some FAST party ministers.
Opposition Leader Hon. Tuilaepa Sailele Malielegaoi has voiced objections, while FAST Chairman Hon. La’auli Leuatea Schmidt justifies the ministers’ absence, explaining that the trip was planned months ago.
Several FAST ministers and members have traveled to Brisbane, Australia, to begin a fundraising and celebration tour, with plans to return before the summit begins. La’auli assured the Prime Minister and Cabinet that the ministers will be present for the opening day and the welcoming of CHOGM leaders.
La’auli explained that the trip, planned in June, is to meet supporters in Australia, New Zealand, and the United States. He confirmed that Prime Minister Hon. Fiame Naomi Mata’afa will attend one of the events in Australia, as well as similar celebrations in New Zealand and the U.S.
The government leaders are expected to return to Samoa before the summit starts.
In response to questions about the ministers’ leave, La’auli said there is a Cabinet mandate allowing ministers to take leave for political or family matters, with permission required in advance.
Opposition leader Tuilaepa, however, raised concerns, stating that the timing of the trip reflects poorly on the country.
He warned that missing part of the summit for fundraising suggests self-serving motives, urging leaders to prioritise national interests during such a critical time.
