Lord Jonathan Marland, Chairman of the Commonwealth Enterprise and Investment Council, recognised Hon. Tuilaepa Sailele Malielegaoi as the man whose vision brought the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting (CHOGM) to Samoa.
During a CHOGM dinner on Thursday, 24 October in front of leaders and delegates from 56 nations, Lord Marland acknowledged Tuilaepa’s foresight, commitment, and dedication as Prime Minister, crediting him for securing Samoa as the first Pacific host of the Commonwealth event.
The enthusiastic applause from attendees reflected the pride Samoans feel for Tuilaepa’s leadership and his drive to secure Samoa’s place on the world stage.
Lord Marland’s recognition stood in contrast to the current FAST administration’s consistent refusal to acknowledge Tuilaepa’s past efforts—a pattern that many believe will continue.

While the FAST government may withhold recognition, the world now sees Tuilaepa’s influence acknowledged by a prominent international figure. His legacy, fueled by confidence in Samoa’s potential, has left a lasting mark with CHOGM now part of the nation’s history.
In the words of one audience member, “Thank you, Hon. Tuilaepa, for the faith you placed in our people and for bringing CHOGM to Samoa.”
